This blog was create to get the word out about the many ways we can green up the revitalization of the Humboldt Bay Port and create jobs. Located on the North Coast of California.
About RAPIT:
About 6 years ago, local attorney Bill Bertain, business owner Pete Oringer,
and tour operator Jackie Jeffrey chartered a bus and took a busload of
locals to visit the Port of Oakland. We had contacted Oakland to give us a
tour and show us how their port might offer some guidelines in how we might
revitalize our Port of Humboldt Bay as it transitioned from solely a
resourced dependent economy. Our Oakland tour included wide range of
community members who paid their own way (Pete LaVallee, Howard Riem, Leo
Sears, Charles Ollivier, etc).
About 3 years ago several of us that went on the 2002 Oakland tour better
defined the group and named it RAPIT (Rail and Port Infrastructure
Taskforce). RAPIT’s focus is the return of rail service to the north coast
and the revitalization of the Harbor and to create quality living wage jobs
and is strictly a volunteer and non-partisan group. RAPIT spans the complete
political spectrum and includes people from throughout the Northcoast. Bill
Bertain and Pete Oringer organize our periodic meetings that typically have
about 20 people in attendance, often including members of the Board of
Supervisors, Rail Authority commissioners and Harbor Commissioners. We often
teleconference with NCRA (North Coast Rail Authority) CEO, Mitch Stogner.
